The energy efficiency of a building is a good practice of Facilities Management (FM). More than 90% of the time people are in a building. The cost of energy used in a building is contributed a significant amount from the total energy usage of the country in which the building is located. Energy saving is one of the major roles of the facility manager because of it.
Windows are used for several purposes in a building. Among them, windows are the main building element of admitting natural light to the building. However, it is one of the main ways of entering heat into the building. More heat gain requires more energy to adjust the cooling requirement of the building in its comfort level. In another way, without windows, the cost of lighting will increase.
The technology of smart windows provides a good solution for the above issue with introducing them. They control the amount of light and heat when entering the building. There is a thin film deposited on glasses and the building occupants can easily adjust the sunlight in its comfort level through an app in their mobile phones. Furthermore, currently, the researchers try to develop a flexible version to apply this technology for the existing windows. The windows are powered by the solar energy itself which are in them as transparent solar cells. Because of that, this technology reduces the cost of lighting and heating, and the electrical energy as zero to power them. The amount of this can be identified approximately as a 40% reduction.
The facility manager is the person who has the responsibility of managing non-core businesses with cost-effective procedures. The heat, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is the one of major energy-using systems of a building which can be identified approximately as more than 50% in most of the building types. The smart window technology is a good invention regarding energy saving and FM which can give the answers to all those questions.
