Internet of Things (IoT) Technology As a Better Option in Facilities Management
2021-07-13 by IFMSL
A service or facility is a huge responsibility in an organization that is a part of the non-core business. It is a challenge that runs at a reasonable level while managing the core business. Perfect management of facilities results in a good functionality of the core business with better profit. Because of that reason, to mitigate the concentration of the challenge, the Internet of Things (IoT) technology which can track all Facilities Management (FM) activities, is used by the facility manager in the workplace.
Then, how IoT improves FM?
IoT helps to track the facilities and monitor them concerning the data provided through the sensors. Further, since this technology, the efficiency is boosted by reducing the operating costs. It can be explained as follows.
Through sensor-based automation, the system captures the environmental data and others, predicts through analysis, and minimizes the safety threats by responding automatically without human interaction.
This technology can reduce the operating cost of tools. The use of a tool is less here than using it individually because they connect through the technology and utilize it according to the demand. Less use will reduce the operating cost.
The facility manager can enhance transparency and performance by providing real-time updates of systems through this technology.
This will reduce the frustrations of employees and increase their performance by guiding them through sensors. Because IoT sensors track the data and provide them with less time, employees can perform their performances more than a normal situation.
Through the cameras and other devices such as tags and beacons connected with IoT, the facility manager, and safety officer can identify safety hazards and mitigate them effectively before happened.
What are IoT devices?
Sensors – used to capture environmental variables such as velocity, motion, pressure, vibration, humidity level, and moisture.
Beacons – small wireless tools used to transfer data via Bluetooth. These devices can be used for security purposes such as monitoring the state of machinery, tracking locations, and verifying ID.
RFID trackers – these are used to access control, asset monitoring, track real-time location, and track the number of employees in one place.
Automated transportation – used to the item transportation purpose without human interaction.
Data analytics and visual tools – used to visualize data for analyzing purposes.
IoT is a better option in FM to handle the non-core business. The facility manager can ensure the efficiency as well as the safety of the workplace while reducing the operating cost through this technology. This is a smart platform in FM which creates an agile environment in the workplace.
